How to choose compatible PC components

Start with your workloads and an exact CPU model. Then check the board and BIOS, memory type, component clearance and power connections. A matching socket is one check, not confirmation that the entire build is compatible.

CPU, motherboard and BIOS

Find the processor on the supported CPU list for the exact motherboard model and revision. Compare the minimum BIOS version with the installed version. Confirm an unknown version before buying: the same socket does not guarantee a first boot without an update.

Use the manual for your board. The update procedure and whether it can run without an installed CPU depend on the model.

Memory type and the exact kit

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable in a slot. Check the memory type, slot count, capacity per module and CPU and board limits. The advertised speed of a memory kit is not a guarantee for every system.

Compare the full kit part number with the board manufacturer’s QVL. Absence from the list does not establish incompatibility, but it is not evidence that the combination was tested. Distinguish total RAM capacity from the number of modules.

Physical clearance

Compare graphics card length and thickness with case limits. Check air cooler height or the size and mounting position of a liquid cooling radiator. Installed fans, radiators and drive cages can reduce usable space.

For an SSD, verify the interface and board length as well as the M.2 format. Read the motherboard manual for shared lanes, slots and ports.

Power capacity and connectors

Use the recommendation for the exact graphics card as a starting check, then consider the whole system. Verify board, CPU and graphics power connections and the PSU form factor. There is no single wattage suitable for every build.

Do not assume modular PSU cables are interchangeable because the plugs fit. Follow the documentation for the specific supply and do not open it.

Using the SmartWave configurator

Add actual components by category and read both conflict warnings and outstanding checks. Missing exact BIOS, memory or clearance information requires verification; it is not a compatibility approval.

Check the selected configuration, price and stock for each item before buying. A saved build does not reserve products by itself; the selection is stored in your browser. An unknown price is not a zero price.
